Patient arrested for battering Vero hospital staff

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A Fort Pierce man who was admitted to the Indian River County Medical Center as a patient, allegedly caused a disturbance in the hospital that resulted in injuries to two medical care professionals and one law enforcement officer.

On Monday, Sept. 1, a detective responded to escort a patient identified as Brian Adcock back to his hospital room. Adcock was attempting to leave the hospital, according to the arrest affidavit.

As the detective arrived, he observed Adcock punch a Physician Assistant twice in the face and head-butt a Registered Nurse who was attempting to stop the patient from further attacking the Physician Assistant.

The detective intervened and attempted to restrain Adcock while Adcock “continued to knowingly and intentionally physically resist arrest with violence,” according to the police report. Adcock also removed the officer’s radio and threw it several feet away, rendering the officer incapable of communicating with other law enforcement during the struggle.

The Physician Assistant suffered several small lacerations near his right eye and the Registered Nurse was temporarily knocked unconscious. A large bruise was noticeable on the Registered Nurse’s forehead and he was unable to complete his shift due to his injuries.

The arresting detective suffered injuries to his hand due to Adcock’s resisting his arrest.

Adcock is being held on $40,000 bond and faces two charges of felony battery on an emergency medical care provider, felony resist arrest with violence, and felony deprive officer of means of communication.
