Edward A. Tillis, 71, Indian River County

Edward A. Tillis, 71, passed away on Aug. 2, 2014 at Indian River Medical Center. He was born in Fort Pierce, on Oct. 16, 1942, son, of Edward Land Corrine Tillis.

He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting and fishing. Prior to his retirement, he worked at Indian River Correctional Institution for 27 years. Ed was a 1962 graduate of Vero Beach High School. He was a 4- H leader for Indian River County.

He served eight years in the United States Army including three tours of Vietnam. He received two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for his heroic service.

He dedicated many years to the Florida Peace Officers’ Association including being president from 1998 to 1999. Ed was a Sports Director of Florida Police and Fire Games for many years.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Cheryl; daughters, Cecelia (Darren) Meeks, Celina (Kevin) Dampier; son, David; grandchildren, Kimberli (Matt) Hall, Katie, Kevin and Bryan Dampier and Shane Andrew and Danielle Meeks; brother, Bill Tillis; and sister, Carol Voth.

He is also survived by his beloved dogs, Kodiak and Mr. Beefy, and cats, Mr. Boots and Chester. Family will receive visitors on Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, from 5- 6 p.m. at Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home. The Memorial Service will follow at 6 p.m.
