Betty Lou Powhatan, 94, Vero Beach

Betty Lou Powhatan, 94, of Vero Beach, passed away on July 30, 2016, at the Indian River Medical Center.

She is survived by her daughters Becky Powhatan (Mark) Kelley of Atlanta, Ga., and Mary Margaret (Patrick) Hallgren of Orlando; sister Gloria Welch of Norman, Okla.; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert E. Powhatan and a son Robert Scott Powhatan.

Powhatan was born in Olney, Ill., and moved to Vero Beach in 1969.

Shortly after she married her husband Robert they purchased a small grocery store where they steadily worked side by side, an aspect of their relationship that was woven into their lives. After the grocery business, they worked 20 years together in the appliance and music business in Illinois. Upon moving to Vero Beach, she worked with him in real estate.

Powhatan was a long-standing member of the First Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach, where she served as a Deacon. She was also a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, having joined in 1943 and remained active until her death.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 520 Royal Palm Boulevard, Vero Beach, FL 32960.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m., Aug. 20, 2016, at the First Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach.

Arrangements are under the direction of Strunk Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach.
