Homeless Awareness Week Nov. 10-17

VERO BEACH — Shelter is a necessity. On any given night, there are approximately 700 homeless men, women, and children in Indian River County, 250 of which are sleeping in their cars or illegally camping in the woods, according to the most recent “Point In Time Survey.”

This is not a lifestyle of their choosing; it is economic desperation. Hunger is also an epidemic, affecting real people, including families with children. Feeding America reports that just in Indian River County alone there are over 24,500 people who are going hungry every day.

November 10-17 is Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week. Relief organizations and agencies all over the nation are teaming up in an effort to raise awareness surrounding the dire circumstances facing our neighbors and family members who have found themselves homeless, hungry, or on the verge of both.

The Source invites you to partner with us in changing the landscape of our community one person or family at a time. Here is how you can help.

Right now, The Source is accepting donations such as: 6×8 pre-made Thanksgiving side dishes (e.g. stuffing, green beans, and candied yams,) apple cider, coffee, tea, sugar, MREs (Meals Ready To Eat,) $5 and $10 Subway, Chick-fil-A, McDonald’s or Burger King gift cards, men and women’s deodorant, men’s boxers/briefs, sizes small, medium and large, socks, gloves, bike tire patch kits, bike lights, batteries, tents, tarps, backpacks, and flashlights.
