The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships, which began in 1955. Students enter the competition by taking the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT), a national test, in their junior year. The PSAT is divided into three sections: critical reading, math, and writing skills.
Of the 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entering the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program, 16,000 semifinalists were chosen, and about 15,000 of those semifinalists are expected to advance to the finalist level.
Finalists will be notified in February and will be able to compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 scholarships. In addition, about 200 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4,800 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for finalists who will attend the sponsor institution.
“The semifinalists are to be commended. I wish them well in the continuing competition. I am so proud of them and hope that they will all become finalists,” explained Dr. Fran Adams, Superintendent.
